Aims & Objectives:
Information on neurophysiology of the lower urinary tract and on pathophysiology related to cerebral, spinal and peripheral lesions, and how they are reflected in clinical symptoms will be presented. Standard diagnostic approach and the value of the classic urodynamic techniques will be discussed. An overview on the therapeutic strategies in 2015 in patients with an overactive detrusor and with an underactive detrusor, each combined either with an underactive sphincter, an overactive sphincter or a normal sphincter will be given. After the break the workshop will focus on a disease specific, case based approach in the diagnosis, management and treating potential complications of the most common neuro-urologic conditions. Individual case based studies of these diseases in a step wise manner involving the audience in understanding the best management of neuropathic bladder in context of different pathologies will be presented. Special emphasis will be on the long term management and treatment of complications. An effort will be made to highlight the important differences in the management of a neuropathic bladder secondary to spinal cord injury vs multiple sclerosis. Having participated in Part 1 of this course, you should have basic knowledge on neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, its pathophysiology and its diagnostic workup, furthermore you should be aware what can be offered to the individual patient nowadays. You should be well prepared for Part 2, to discuss the cases being presented.
